I have to say, having a box extender isn’t something you’ll see at the hardware store. It’s what you’ll see in the outdoor electrical boxes of houses that are being remodeled. You really need one, especially if you have a small deck or patio. I haven’t had one of these for years so I decided to build one myself.
I took the advice of a friend who said I needed to put one in my front door. In my first attempt, the box wasnt really sturdy enough for the weight that I was putting on it, and I had to rip it out, but now its sturdy enough to hold my door. Ive used a few of these in the past, its a good thing to have around when youre remodeling your home.
I should mention that I’m not sure if this is the right place to post this, but the last time I used a box extender, I accidentally pulled out the panel that covers the outlet, and that caused an electrical fire. Even if your new box does have a ground connection, it doesnt always have to be the same one as your old box. If the ground connection is switched, you could damage your new box.

But if you are in an urban setting where you don’t know what voltage your power supply is, you will damage your outdoor electric cable.
